Individual Therapy

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY IN MATTESON & HOMEWOOD, IL

Life can feel heavy sometimes. Maybe you're worried a lot, feeling low, or just not like yourself. You don't have to carry it alone. Individual therapy gives you a private, one-on-one space to talk, be heard, and feel better — at your own pace.

At Elevation Individual and Family Therapy, we offer individual therapy in Matteson and Homewood, IL, and across the Chicago Southland. We're a Black-owned, culturally responsive practice. That means we see you, we respect your story, and we welcome people of every background, faith, and walk of life.

what is individual therapy?

Individual therapy is a one-on-one meeting between you and a licensed therapist. It's sometimes called "talk therapy" or counseling. Your sessions are private and focused only on you — your feelings, your goals, and what matters most in your life.

In each session, you and your therapist work together. You talk about what's going on. Your therapist listens closely, helps you understand your feelings, and teaches you healthy ways to cope. Over time, many people feel calmer, stronger, and more in control.

Unlike family or group therapy, individual therapy keeps the full attention on you. What you share stays private, except in rare cases where the law requires us to keep someone safe. This private space makes it easier to talk about hard things at your own speed.

who is individual therapy for?

Individual therapy can help almost anyone. You don't need to be in crisis to start. Many people come to therapy because they feel stuck, stressed, sad, or overwhelmed.

You might find therapy helpful if you are:

  • Feeling anxious, worried, or on edge
  • Feeling down, tired, or hopeless
  • Healing from trauma or a painful past
  • Grieving a loss
  • Going through a big life change
  • Struggling with self-esteem or identity
  • Dealing with stress at work, school, or home

Therapy is for children, teens, and adults. Whatever season of life you're in, there is support for you here.

what can i expect in individual therapy?

Starting therapy can feel scary. That's normal. We work hard to make your first visit feel warm and safe.

Your first session is called an intake. It's mostly a chance for us to get to know you. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you're hoping for, and a little about your life and history. There are no wrong answers, and you never have to share more than you're ready to.

After that, you and your therapist will set goals together and build a plan that fits your needs. Most sessions last about 45 to 60 minutes. Some people come for a few weeks; others stay longer. You're always in charge of your own pace.

culturally responsive therapy

You deserve a therapist who understands your world. As a Black-owned practice serving the south suburbs of Chicago, we offer care that honors your culture, your faith, and your lived experience. You won't have to explain or defend who you are. We create a space where you feel seen and respected — and everyone is welcome here.
